We always stop here (we have 4 kids) when we are traveling north Texas. It is always clean, and there are vending machines for sodas and snacks. We have taken photos here too, near the picnic tables in springtime when there are wildflowers. This is a nice place to eat lunch, or for a pit stop.

Nice little rest area. Plants feature at stop were nicely maintained. I appreciate the design they went for in the buildings and picnic areas. Could be cleaner, but they do get a lot of traffic.

When traveling from and to the valley this is my first or last stop. First stop out of valley until possibly next stop after Victoria. Coming or going this place is always well lit and fairly clean plus I always feel safe due to lighting

I don't mind stopping here at all. It's got a lot of walking space. It is between highways so you exit to the left for it. I don't drive long distance often so it was a first for me. The restrooms could use a little remodeling or cleaning but for the most part it's a great rest stop. A lot of cops in the area as well as it's not far from a check point. Maybe about 5 miles.

This is a great place to stop and stretch your legs when on 281. I have stopped several times over the last few years, both coming and going, and it's always clean and well stocked with toilet paper. It also keeps me out of convenience stores, away from both people and junk food temptations.

I stop here every time I travel from Houston to the valley. They have a pretty nice trail going through at both ends. Gives you a chance to walk around and actually enjoy your time. Towards to south end of the picnic area there's a bee tree. That's worth stopping to see by itself. There's wild flowers, a frog pond, cacti and birds. It's not uncommon to see Mexican Eagles here. Plenty of handicap parking and rest room signs also include braille. A lot of picnic area, including many that are covered, making this a great place to picnic even on rainy days. Police and Border Patrol are through here often throughout the day and night as there is a Border Patrol check point just south a few miles and a weigh station north a couple of miles. Very safe place to stop for the day or night. Also has security cameras in place and the area is well lit. Good place to bring children to take on the trails and to enjoy nature in a safe environment. Sadly, there is not a playground here but there is plenty of room to roam. Most of the year, there are a lot of different wild flowers and normally see many different types of butterflies. I think that the wild flowers are in season from late February thru late November. All and all, my favorite place that I visit almost weekly.

Always clean, well-lit, and definitely convenient. They've got two sets of bathrooms, covered picnic tables, as well as vending machines -- if you need a quick snack. I appreciate the fact that they didn't cut down any native trees in order to build this place. It's set nicely into the natural landscape under the shade of plenty of oak trees. I also like that they have a designated pet area. This rest area is located between the city of Falfurrias and the checkpoint on highway 281 (I-69) between the north and south lanes.

Beautiful place to rest and stretch one’s legs. Good place to walk your dogs too. Well taken care of and supper clean. No bad smells. There are parrillas to grill good food.

A very large tree filled (nearly wooded) area in the middle of the highway. It's more than a rest area, this is damn near a camp ground and the hookups. The facilities are just the toilets and sinks but that's all you'd expect from a rest stop anyhow. The sheer length of the walking trails is enough for anyone to be impressed, but there are also covered picnic areas with outdoor grills. I was almost disappointed we had bought our tacos beforehand.

The Brooks County Rest Area is a delightful gem for anyone who loves nature and appreciates a serene break during their travels. Surrounded by an abundance of trees, this rest stop offers a tranquil escape that makes you feel fully immersed in nature. It’s commendable how well-preserved the area is, maintaining its natural charm while being welcoming and accessible. The facilities are thoughtfully laid out, with plenty of tables and BBQ pits that make it an excellent spot for a cookout or a relaxed picnic. The restrooms are clean and well-maintained, a testament to the care put into this area. For added convenience, there are snack and drink vending machines to satisfy your cravings during a quick pause. However, as with any outdoor area, it’s essential to stay alert—there are signs warning about snakes, so keep an eye out and stay safe. Overall, the Brooks County Rest Area is not just a place to stop and rest but an inviting oasis to reconnect with nature while on the road. Highly recommended for a refreshing pause!
